The AMG® in Mercedes-AMG® represents the engineers who created it. Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher. The A and M represent the two engineers, while the G stands for Großaspach, the birthplace of Aufrecht.

Brief Overview of AMG® in the Mercedes-Benz Legacy

The two engineers developed AMG® because they loved car racing. While they were working for Mercedes, they started to create a racing engine to put in the 300 SE sedan, but before they had a chance to show off their engine and test it out, Daimler-Benz, the automaker behind Mercedes-Benz, got out of motorsports and racing.

Aufrecht and Melcher continued to work on the engine in their spare time, and in 1965, they entered it in the German Touring Car Championship, where it won 10 races.

In 1967, Aufrecht and Melcher decided to leave Daimler-Benz to create their own business, and the AMG® brand was born. While their first engine was very successful at the track, their vision was to bring it to vehicles that would drive on the road, too. They wanted to bring what they learned at the track to make vehicles on the road go even faster. To do this, they began modifying Mercedes vehicles to fit the AMG® vision.
